Statement from Katherine Lorenz

Austin, Texas (August 6, 2014)—As someone who has dedicated her career to seeking sustainable solutions for our planet, I’m disappointed that there continues to be those who spend their time, effort, and money on making unfounded, politically motivated claims rather than focusing on solutions.

As a pragmatic environmentalist, I serve on the board of the Environmental Defense Fund and as president and board member of the Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation.

For more than 36 years, the foundation has worked as an engine of change in both policy and practice in Texas, seeking innovative, sustainable solutions for human and environmental problems.

George P. Mitchell was an early pioneer of shale gas discovery and production and, importantly, one of the earliest voices of the sustainability movement. Because of George's position in the natural gas industry, environmental, and science circles, the foundation is able to lend its voice—and be heard above the rhetoric about natural gas and hydraulic fracturing—to the ongoing dialogue and debate about the development of this important energy resource. 

The foundation supports the emerging regulatory, industry, environmental and academic efforts to reduce the negative environmental and community impacts of shale formation development and hydraulic fracturing while capturing the energy, environmental, and economic benefits of natural gas. 

The foundation understands the challenge of humans and nature coexisting in a market-driven economy. We do our best to invest carefully as we practice a unique kind of philanthropy—one that is strategic in seeking out and supporting innovative leaders, thinkers, and organizations as engines of change in both policy and practice. In doing so, we strive to support high-impact projects at the nexus of environmental protection, social equity, and economic vibrancy.
