LEGACY

The Legacy Program honors and advances Cynthia and George Mitchell's philanthropic vision by supporting organizations and initiatives that reflect the Mitchells' enduring interests in science, sustainability, education, community development, and the arts throughout Texas—supporting their established legacy and emerging opportunities they would have championed.

Since its incorporation in 1978, the foundation has steadfastly championed scientific progress, environmental stewardship, and sustainability. This commitment to scientific advancement is exemplified by annual investments in CGMF’s sustainability program, transformative investments such as the Mitchell Institute for Fundamental Physics and Astronomy at Texas A&M University and the Giant Magellan Telescope, and pioneering support for sustainability science at the National Academy of Sciences.

The Legacy Program continues Cynthia Mitchell's passionate belief in the arts' capacity to transform lives and communities. Through institutions like the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts at the University of Houston and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, the foundation ensures broad public access to performing and visual arts, reaching tens of thousands of students, community members, and visitors annually.

The Pavilion stands as a cultural cornerstone of The Woodlands—George Mitchell's visionary community opened in 1974 to harmonize environmental preservation, economic opportunity, and social inclusion within the natural beauty of the East Texas Piney Woods.

The Legacy Program allocates its resources between major, multi-year projects and ongoing support for historical partners, ensuring continued commitment to established relationships and the ability to pursue new opportunities that would have captured the Mitchells' imagination and support.

Through this balanced approach, the Legacy Program serves as a catalyst for transformative change, guided by the principles of social responsibility, respect for the individual, and reverence for the natural environment that characterized the Mitchells' lives and work.
