Sustainable Development, Rice University

Sustainable development is a mode of human development in which resource use aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for generations to come.

In 2002, George and Cynthia donated $2 million to fund the George and Cynthia Mitchell Chair in Sustainable Development and Environmental Economics within the Department of Economics at Rice University.
